Jul. 25th, 2008 @ 01:28 pm shadesong's blogathon for BARCC, tomorrow!
Current Mood: good
Tomorrow, beginning at 9am EST, [info]shadesong and a team of bloggers (including other f'listers of mine, [info]jennifer and [info]figmentj) will be participating in Blogathon, posting every half hour for 24 hours to raise money for charity; 'song's chosen charity is the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC). For more details about their efforts, you can see 'song's entry here.

The really neat thing about [info]shadesong's entries are that she'll be writing flash fiction "in the persona of a psychometric xenoarchaeologist examining artifacts from the last days of Earth". A bunch of artists (like [info]mnfiddledragon, [info]jnanacandra, [info]azhure, [info]kythryne, [info]puddin666, [info]s00j, and, well, myself) have donated items to be auctioned off on eBay in conjunction with her blogging efforts. She'll be writing a piece of fiction about each item, and the winner of the auction will receive a story card with the item.

I donated a copy of our newest CD, Vitus Dance. You can find that auction here! Go forth and bid, on this and many other fine auction items!

One of the negative side-effects of my being sick seems to be a complete loss of time orientation...I actually had to look at the calendar to figure out what day of the week this was. I feel like I've lost part of my "time off" to absolutely nothing.

My innards seem to be behaving at the moment. I still have a bit of a headache, although that may be from sleeping so much and so irregularly (two hours here, four there, one somewhere else). I also need to wander back over to the store and pick up some more liquid to put into myself, along with some kitty kibble. I'd planned on going to town today to buy a couple of things, but until I'm absolutely certain I'm over this whatever-it-was, I'm not going to attempt it. I have to make the ride Sunday...that's probably plenty early enough.

Interesting sidenote...there are signs taped to the fuel pumps at the corner store. "No gas until further notice. Sorry for the inconvenience." That's going to cause a bit of a problem for the fire department; we still have one truck (the rescue) that's gasoline-driven. And the generators, the power unit for our hydraulic extrication tool, chain saws, and positive-pressure fan all take gasoline. Sounds like the commissioners have a task before them: locate an alternative source of gasoline and arrange a line of credit.

I think a shower is in order. Away with me.

  1. What type of hair do you have? (Thin, Normal, Thick, Frizzy, etc.) From what I was last told, thick hair.
  2. What color is your hair currently? Pretty much my natural color, as I've been letting it grow out since I colored it in January. And natural color is a light mousy brown with a healthy dose of blonde and red highlights.
  3. What colors have you dyed/highlighted your hair? Black once, blonde twice [once was highlights that ended up getting out of hand], and various shades of red countless times.
  4. If you could dye your hair any color, what would it be? I prefer red, tho' my dream dye job is brassy strawberry blonde with blonde highlights and purple lowlights.
  5. What is your hair's length? About to my shoulderblades, I'd guess now. Or at least mostly to that length.. Not including the shaved stuff, of course.

  1. Who was the last new person you met? What were the circumstances? I guess it'd be the new girl on the team at work?
  2. What was the last meeting you attended? What were the circumstances? As often as we get newbies on the team?
  3. How often do you meet new people, in general? Why? It really depends. I don't meet people as much as I probably should...
  4. How often do you attend meetings, in general? Why? Well, we have the team meeting once a week at work...
  5. Describe your nightmare meeting and your dream meeting. It would really depend on what the meeting is about, to be honest...

Feeling Threatened
Afraid Of The Truth

Most of us have had the experience of being in possession of a piece of truth that we were afraid to share because we knew it would not be well received. There are also instances in which we ourselves have been unable to handle some truth confronting us. This might be a small truth, such as not wanting to see that our car needs repairs because we don’t want to pay for them, or a large truth, such as not fully accepting that someone close to us is pushing us away. Usually the truth is evident, and we can see it if we choose, but we have elaborate ways of hiding the truth form ourselves, no matter how apparent it is.

For the most part, we avoid the truth because it scares us, or makes us angry, or makes us feel like we don’t know what to do. We often create our lives based on a particular understanding, and if that understanding turns out to be fully or even partially incorrect, we may feel that our whole sense of reality is being threatened. It takes a strong person to face the truth in circumstances like these, and many of us run for cover instead. Nevertheless, we can only avoid the truth for so long before it begins to make itself known in ever more forceful ways.

Ultimately, there is no way to avoid the truth, no matter how painful it is, so the sooner we let down our defenses, the better. When we know the truth and accept that we may have to adjust our lives to accommodate, we are in alignment with reality. At the same time, we can be patient with people around us who have a hard time seeing the truth, because we know how painful it can be. Whatever the truth is, we make a sincere effort not to close our eyes to it, but instead to be grateful that we have access to it.

I found myself in a desert called Cyberland. It was hot. My canteen had sprung a leak and I was thirsty...

Wrong movie, Elphie....

But srsly, I had a weird dream last night. I dreamed I was back in school. It was a class that combined my playwriting courses from PSU with my acting/voice classes from UWGB. And it was primarily my acting/voice classmates from UWGB, as well as my actiing prof L from UWGB. There were other people in the class, but now I don't remember who they were. Anyway, we were doing a "show and tell" type day. I had a play I'd written that needed to have a reading for the class, but it was handwritten and I hadn't had a chance to get anyone to do practice readings or this "final" reading, so I explained this to L and said that I'd just wing it as a monologue for the reading. She said this was fine, so that's what I did. I got a lot of kudos in the class for the complexity of the piece. It was about a man in his 30s who was caring for an elderly father with senility/health issues, and how the man was plotting with another man [a black man, this was important in the dream] to kill his father so he could get out from under the heavy, burdensome yoke of caring for his father. It was really fascinating in the dream, trust me. Anyway, as we finished the reading, the space we were in morphed from the acting/voice room at UWGB to what could be described as either a small studio-type apartment or a hotel room. Turns out this room was where L lived, and it was quite messy, to say the least. We were further discussing what I'd written and how I'd morphed it for the reading [by this time, the bulk of the students disappeared]. The thing I remember most from this part of the dream was that she'd said just how complex the piece I'd written had been and that I'd always had a penchant for using language in ways no one else has. Not long after that, I woke up thanks, Gabe!...

It really was an interesting dream. And seems oddly appropriate right now, as I'm having some struggles with my writing. I think I need to make some changes, I'm just not sure exactly what they are yet, or how to implement them... But I think one big push I got out of this dream is that I really need to work on more original stuff....

...apparently the gossip about it being Newsweek there on the autograph line was slightly exaggerated -- here's an article from USA Today about us. :)

Check out the first picture of their photo gallery, and you'll see what I meant about the freaking airplanes over the Arena, OMG.

...That, and it's Papa Johns! :D

The video selection just makes me giggle, cuz they talk about the "searing heat" of Rosemont, Illinois. LMAO It was only 84 degrees, folks, after the rain stopped and the sun came out for a while... LOLOLOLOL I was like, "what?? In my hometown today, the forecast high was for 99 degrees -- that's 'searing'!"

*snerk*

Anyway -- go check it out. :DD

Current Music: Fastball - "Airstream (Live)"
I will get all of the totals and shipping info sorted this weekend! Sorry for the delay!

If you couldn't tell already, I have turned into quite a big Fastball fanboy. I'm about to send a bunch of their music to the music director of a new(-ish) NYC radio station. My brother and I have also discussed booking them a gig in this area. And I've e-mailed a record label about them.

I'd say Fastball is probably pretty sick of me. And everyone else is sick of me talking about Fastball.

Oh, well.

When I believe in someone, usually a band, I pimp them. With Fastball it's sort of different because they have actually had fame that others can only dream of. But they don't anymore. It breaks my heart that people can write them off as a one-hit-wonder when they've produced such fantastic music since their radio hits. And yeah, those were great songs, but what came later was even better.

But America doesn't believe in second chances. America will gladly hand you your 15 minutes of fame but will tire of you quickly and cast you aside: you had your turn, you're done now. America doesn't even care what your name is.

I have been an actual fan of Fastball for 10 years, longer than any other band, even the band I call my favorite, Oasis. It's true that I was down-and-out for a few years, but hell, so were they! I remember being heartbroken when their greatest hits came out because I was sure they were finished, and it was unclear if they were. When they released their fourth album my brother bought it and we forced our parents to listen to it when we went out to dinner.

I have so many little bitty stories about my history as a fan. (Though I've said this 100 times, anyone remember our guinea pig Tony? Where do you think Tony got his name?)

The best would be the concert on May 31st. I was so starstruck when Miles walked right by me as I contemplated a purchase at the merch table. In fact, I was so starstruck that I wouldn't even approach the band for autographs; a big fan that is quite friendly with the band actually took my CD sleeve and handed it to the band for me. When he went over I wouldn't even walk behind their instruments because I didn't want to intrude, but they all encouraged me to come over and I actually got to shake Miles' hand. I could barely speak (better than usual when I DO NOT SHUT UP; poor Dave Mustaine was a victim of that). The fact that I actually managed a conversation with Miles later is pretty amazing.

I have actually tried to follow this band around the country, but lack the financial means to do so. I could have gone on July 3rd, and did not. I regret that decision every single day.

Anyway, I'm not really sure what the purpose of this entry is. Maybe some of you will give Fastball another listen. Maybe some of you will relate to my weird feelings about bands/music/celebrities. Maybe some of you will just think I'm weird/crazy. Whatever. I'll be fine in my little fanboy world.
